Reideer herder for a day (1 day) We welcome You to visit Girjjas (on of the Sami communities in Sweden) in the work with the reindeers during the winter. We’ll spend a day with one of the (winter)groups – a sita. This is an exclusive opportunity to get acquainted with as well the old sami tradition as the modern reindeer herding of today. A part from that, You’ll get a magnificent experience of the “real” Swedish winter, either in the primeval forest or in/on the lower mountains. We join the reindeer herders in their work with the reindeer herd. Normally, this means checking the herd by snowmobile, but it can also mean that we’ll witness a reindeer separation. Since the reindeer herding is very depending on the changes of nature and weather, we’ll give You a more detailed presentation of the plans when You arrive. We’ll be having lunch outdoors and later, in the afternoon, round off an eventful day over a cup of coffee. Afterwards, we’ll take You back to Kiruna. During Your entire stay, You’ll be accompanied by proficient sami guides. Time: about 9 am – 5 pm (Dec-March) Included: the whole program, lunch, coffee in the afternoon, warm outdoor clothes, Swe- English talking guide, transfer Requirements: Minimum age: 10 Cost: SEK 3 750 (2 – 6 persons) |

Visit reindeer herders (4 days) Visit Girjjas, one of the Sami communities in Sweden, and be a part of the work with the reindeer herd in wintertime. If You are interested in nature and culture, this is the chance to get to know about the unique sami culture and the special life of the reindeer herding north of the polar circle. We go along with reindeer herders in the daily work with the reindeer herd during the winter season. This usually means driving around and seeing to the herd by snowmobile, but may also include taking part at a reindeer separation or in moving the herd to new places for finding food. The reindeers spend the winter in the area near the mountain range, where we also might see moose, beasts of prey and small animals like hare, bird and fox in their natural environment. 1st day: We transfer You from Kiruna to our horse farm in the village of Puoltsa, 25 km west of Kiruna. On the farm, You’ll have the chance to get familiar with reindeers, since we keep a couple of reindeers on our farm each winter. You’ll also be taught how do drive a snowmobile, since we’ll be driving quite a lot during these days. After the dinner we’ll show You a slide show about the year of the reindeer herding. 2nd – 3d day: In the morning, we go by snowmobile or car to the area where the reindeers are for the time being. These days will be spent at the work with the reindeers, but since the reindeer herding is very depending on the changes of nature and weather, we’ll give You a more detailed presentation of the plans when You arrive. We return to Puoltsa in the evening of the 3d day. 4th day: The last day, we’ll make a trip to the world famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, before we take You back to Kiruna and it’s time to say good- bye. The first as well as the last night, You’ll be spending in a cottage on our farm. The second night will be spent in a cottage or Sami tepee depending on where we are. Our food will mostly consist of local specialities, e.g. game and fish. Time and duration: 4 days (December - April) Included: the whole program, full board and lodging (lunch day1-lunch day4), warm outdoor clothes, Swe- English speaking guide, transfer Requirements: good physical health, minimum age is 16 years Cost: 15 500 SEK (2 – 6 persons) |

Wildlife tracking (5 days) Join us on a magnificent adventure in one of the best preserved high mountain areas in Europe. This is a special opportunity for those interested in learning more about the Swedish beasts of prey and at the same time experience a breath-taking scenery. You look for tracks of wolverine and lynx by snow mobile together with reindeer herders and hopefully you will see some of the shy animals. This requires a great deal of knowledge about, and experience of, the behaviour of these animals. We offer a unique tour along with the well- informed reindeer herders of the Sami community Girjjas. 1st day: We’ll pick You up in Kiruna and take You to our horse farm in the village of Puoltsa, 25 km west of Kiruna. The afternoon will be spent mostly on a snowmobile, learning how to drive it in a safe and correct way. A certain ability in driving a snowmobile will be necessary during these days. After the dinner in the sami teepee we’ll show You a slide show about the year of the reindeer herding. 2nd – 4th day: Having enjoyed breakfast, we’ll go by snowmobile into the high mountain area. During three days, we’ll be moving within one of the most beautiful mountain areas of Sweden, looking for the tracks of the predators. Weather and time permitting, You’ll be able to try some ice fishing and perhaps catch the most noble fish of the area – the red trout. We return to Puoltsa in the evening of the 4th day. 5th day: The last day, we’ll make a trip to the world famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, before we take You back to Kiruna and it’s time to say good- bye. The first as well as the last night, You’ll be spending in a cottage on our farm. The other nights will be spent in strategically located cabins for reindeer herders in the mountains. Our food will mostly consist of local specialities, e.g. game and fish. Since we’ll be staying in an alpine area, the weather might cause some problems and force us to change the programme. During Your entire stay with us, You’ll be accompanied by a proficient sami guide from OFELAŠ. Time and duration: 5 days (February-April) reservation by agreement Included: the whole program, full board and lodging (lunch day1-lunch day5), warm outdoor clothes, Swe- English speaking guide, transfer Requirements: good physical health, minimum age 16 years Cost: SEK 19 900 (3-6 pers) |
